Next to that event, my guitar teacher encouraged me to sing or hum while practicing songs on the guitar. When he finally heard me sing out loud, he decided that I needed to perform for a real audience. So he arranged my first real gigs. One thing lead to another: Singing as a guest act for several bands, having my own band but also solo performances. I was asked to sing on a childrens CD, sang on several dance tracks by Dj Sean Odhran. Singing on dancetracks was really out of my comfort zone but encouraged me to learn more. We even released an EP on iTunes.
But by doing all these different gigs I learned a lot and found out what really appealed to me.
I started writing my own songs, with my stories, with a ‘no-nonsense’ attitude. My first self written song “Saying Goodbye” was well received and lead the final of the Radio 538 Demo Duel contest. Luckily I was not alone, my brother Donald became a good guitarist who helped me write songs. This way I could focus on the lyrics and vocals and he could write the musical parts. It is a treat to write with my brother.
My sister was the one who pushed me to listen to some country songs from Zac Brown band and Darius Rucker. I was sold immediately. This is the musical genre that fits me. All the pieces of the puzzle where there. This is the genre in which I want to grow. So for my appearance on ‘Idols 2016’ (Dutch version of American Idol) I chose to sing ‘Jolene’ by Dolly Parton. The positive feedback given by the judges gave me an extra boost to continue this path of country music. So lets go, yihaaa!
